Scent is an incredible thing. It is a quiet time machine that can instantly transport you back to a specific place, a specific feeling, or a specific person. When we were developing the signature scents for our cuticle oils at Theniya, I knew I did not want them to just smell "nice." I wanted them to feel nostalgic. I wanted them to feel homey. I wanted them to take you back.
There is a real, scientific reason why certain smells trigger such vivid memories. Our olfactory system is directly connected to the emotion and memory centers of our brain. That means a single breath of a familiar fragrance can unlock a memory faster than a photograph can. That emotional connection is exactly the experience we wanted to give you with our scents.
Each of our three signature cuticle oils is rooted in a personal memory of mine. They are inspired by places I have loved, moments that shaped me, and the comforting feeling of being exactly where you are supposed to be.
Chennai Sandalwood: A Return to My Roots
For me, sandalwood is the scent of nostalgia. I grew up in a family that deeply valued our South Indian traditions, and sandalwood has always been an auspicious and sacred element in our culture and religion. It is used in ceremonies to purify the space and evoke a sense of spiritual calm. When I moved to India in middle school, that scent became the backdrop of my daily life. It stuck with me.
Even now, the smell of sandalwood instantly takes me back to those formative years. But for our Chennai Sandalwood oil, I wanted to create a slight fusion. We blended the grounding, woody notes of traditional sandalwood with soft vanilla and other warm scents. The result is something that honors my heritage while feeling incredibly comforting and modern.
Seville Orange: Sun-Drenched Memories of Spain
I have always loved citrus smells and citrus-based drinks, but the inspiration for our Seville Orange oil came from a very specific trip to Spain. If you have ever walked the streets of Seville in the spring, you know the exact scent I am talking about. The city is lined with thousands of orange trees. While the fruit itself is famously bitter, the blossoms fill the warm air with an intoxicating, sweet fragrance.
I wanted to capture that exact feeling: the sweetness lingering in the air, the sun on your skin, and the effortless joy of exploring a new city. Our customers often tell us that this scent reminds them of a creamsicle. It is bright, uplifting, and immediately brings a smile to your face.
Paris Rose: Romance in the Spring
I love big cities, and Paris is one of my absolute favorite places to visit. There are very few places in the world that feel as inherently romantic to me as Paris in the spring. I have always associated the scent of roses with romance, and I wanted to capture the elegance of those famous Parisian rose gardens.
Rose can be a tricky scent to get right. It can sometimes feel heavy or overpowering. But we worked hard to make our Paris Rose scent feel fresh, light, and authentically romantic. We have so many customers who tell us that they do not typically love rose scents, but they absolutely love ours. It is delicate and refined, just like the city that inspired it.
Creating Your Own Ritual
Whether you are drawn to the grounding warmth of sandalwood, the bright joy of orange, or the classic romance of rose, our goal is the same. We want the simple act of caring for your hands to feel like a sensory escape. We want you to take a deep breath, massage the oil into your skin, and let the scent take you somewhere beautiful.
For those who cannot decide on just one destination, we created a way to experience them all. It is the perfect way to build a hand care ritual that changes with your mood.
Scent is so personal. It is tied to our histories, our travels, and our quietest moments. These three scents are a piece of my story, but I would love to know yours. What are your favorite scents? What memories do they bring back for you?
