When I started Theniya, I had been doing my own nails at home for years. It was a quiet, creative outlet that I loved, but it also came with a lot of frustration. I had a really hard time finding high-quality products that were actually designed for the person using them at home. It seemed like salons had access to a completely different tier of quality. Meanwhile, the most accessible products to me were drugstore nail care items filled with ingredients I did not recognize, and it was rarely clear what the actual benefits of using them were.
I wanted something better. I wanted high-quality products that were transparent about their ingredients. I wanted to know exactly what I was putting on my skin and why it was there. But beyond the formulas, I was also frustrated by the packaging.
Designed for You, Not a Salon
If you look at most traditional nail care products, they are packaged for the throughput of a salon. They are designed for a professional who is working on someone else's hands, moving quickly from one client to the next. I could never understand why cuticle oil intended for home use was sold in large dropper bottles or with wide brushes. Those formats make perfect sense if someone else is applying the oil to your hands and then massaging it in. They make very little sense when you are trying to apply it to your own hands while sitting on your couch or sitting at your desk.
We need things that are designed to be used by one hand on another hand. We need products that are travel-friendly, practical, and completely mess-free. If dermatologists recommend using cuticle oil multiple times a day to actually see results, the product has to fit seamlessly into a busy daily routine. It cannot be a hassle to use.
That is why we built Theniya differently. We focused on creating packaging that is intuitive for the individual. We wanted to make the application process so easy and enjoyable that you actually look forward to doing it.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name "Theniya" comes from Tamil, and it translates to "do it yourself." That translation captures the exact ethos of this brand. Theniya is for the people who take their care into their own hands. It is for the quiet moments of maintenance we carve out for ourselves.
But the name also connects deeply to my own heritage. I grew up in a family that valued South Indian traditions, and I spent my middle school years living in India. Those formative years shaped how I view care, craft, and ritual. As an Asian American founder, launching this brand has been a way to weave my cultural background into something tangible. It is incredibly meaningful to me to share this story during AAPI Heritage Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the histories and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
Scents That Inspire Ritual
We develop routines when we actually want to do something. Hand care can easily feel like a chore, but we wanted to elevate it into a ritual. Cuticle oils work best when they are used regularly, just like any other skincare product. To encourage ourselves and everyone in our lives to use them consistently, we knew the experience had to be sensory.
Our scents are developed with pure essential oils to provide real aromatic properties. We did not want them to just smell pleasant. We wanted them to evoke a feeling. Each of our signature scents is tied to a specific memory or place that has shaped me.
Our Chennai Sandalwood oil is a direct nod to my roots. Sandalwood is an auspicious element in South Indian culture, often used in ceremonies to purify and calm. We blended it with warm vanilla to create a scent that feels both nostalgic and deeply comforting.
Our Seville Orange oil was inspired by a trip to Spain, where the streets are lined with orange trees. It captures the sweet, lingering scent of orange blossoms in the spring air. It is bright, uplifting, and a perfect mid-day reset.
And our Paris Rose oil is a tribute to one of my favorite cities. I love big cities, and Paris in the spring is undeniably romantic. We worked hard to make this rose scent feel fresh and light, rather than heavy or overpowering.
Made with Intention
From the beginning, it was important to me that we kept our production close to home. All of our formulas are proudly made in the USA. We prioritize transparency, high-quality ingredients, and thoughtful design because we believe that the tools you use to care for yourself should be worthy of the time you spend using them.
Theniya is more than just nail care. It is a reminder to slow down, to appreciate the craft of doing it yourself, and to honor the hands that hold everything.
